Assistive Device Giving Program of DDS

Enabling Mobility, Independence, and Dignity for Persons with Disabilities

The Disabled Development Society (DDS) is dedicated to empowering persons with disabilities across Bangladesh. One of its most impactful initiatives is the Assistive Device Giving Program, which provides essential mobility and support devices to individuals with physical, visual, and hearing impairments.

Purpose of the Program

The Assistive Device Giving Program aims to reduce physical barriers, promote independence, and improve the quality of life for disabled individuals. Many people with disabilities in Bangladesh lack access to basic assistive tools due to poverty, lack of awareness, or limited availability in rural areas. DDS bridges this gap by distributing devices that restore function, enable access to education and employment, and foster dignity.

Types of Assistive Devices Provided

  • Wheelchairs – For individuals with mobility impairments to regain independence.
  • Crutches and Walking Frames – To support walking and balance for those with limb weaknesses or injuries.
  • White Canes – For the visually impaired to navigate their surroundings confidently.
  • Braille Slates and Books – To help blind children access education.
  • Hearing Aids – For those with hearing loss to improve communication.
  • Prosthetics and Orthotics – To support limb loss or deformities.
  • Modified School Desks and Writing Tools – For children with physical challenges.

Program Activities

  • Identification and assessment of beneficiaries in both urban and rural areas.
  • Organizing distribution events at community centers, DDS offices, or door-to-door delivery in special cases.
  • Training sessions on the proper use and maintenance of devices.
  • Follow-up visits to ensure continued benefit and adjustment of devices if needed.
  • Collaboration with health professionals and technical partners for customization.

Impact

DDS’s Assistive Device Giving Program has helped hundreds of disabled individuals reclaim mobility, attend school, gain employment, and participate in social life with confidence. For many, a simple device becomes a life-changing tool that breaks isolation and dependency.

Future Goals

DDS plans to expand this program further by:

  • Increasing the stock and variety of assistive devices.
  • Partnering with government hospitals, international donors, and CSR programs.
  • Establishing a permanent Assistive Device Resource Center in Dhaka.
