DDS Women Violence Prevention Program
Protecting Rights, Promoting Dignity for Women with Disabilities
The Disabled Development Society (DDS) firmly believes that every woman, regardless of ability, has the right to live a life free from violence, discrimination, and fear. In many communities across Bangladesh, women with disabilities are at a disproportionately high risk of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. DDS addresses this critical issue through its Women Violence Prevention Program, a targeted initiative focused on protection, empowerment, and justice.
Purpose and Importance
Women with disabilities often face dual marginalization—both as females and as persons with disabilities. They may experience abuse within families, institutions, workplaces, or care settings, with limited access to reporting systems or legal support. DDS’s program is designed to:
- Prevent violence through awareness and education.
- Empower women to speak out and seek help.
- Build community support and accountability.
- Ensure access to justice and rehabilitation services.
Core Activities
- Awareness Campaigns: Organizing community-based seminars, rallies, and discussions on gender equality, women’s rights, and anti-violence laws.
- Legal Aid and Counseling: Partnering with legal aid organizations and providing trauma-informed counseling to survivors.
- Self-defense and Leadership Training: Equipping women with confidence and skills to protect themselves and lead others.
- Community Sensitization: Engaging local leaders, police, health workers, teachers, and religious figures to change harmful attitudes and protect vulnerable women.
- Hotline and Referral Services: Helping victims get immediate support, shelter, or legal intervention.
Inclusive Focus
Special attention is given to the unique vulnerabilities of women with physical, sensory, or intellectual disabilities. Training and materials are adapted to be accessible, including sign language interpreters, braille resources, and plain language guides.
Results and Impact
Hundreds of women have gained knowledge about their rights, reported cases of abuse, and received legal and emotional support. Families and communities are more aware of their responsibilities, and local service networks have become more inclusive.
Vision Ahead
DDS aims to establish a Disability and Gender Protection Unit to monitor cases, offer safe spaces, and strengthen national advocacy on inclusive gender-based violence (GBV) prevention. The program also seeks stronger collaboration with law enforcement and government ministries.
